Income Requirements for Mortgages Increase Across Canada, Except in British Columbia

According to research from online mortgage provider Nesto, the income required to qualify for a mortgage in most provinces in Canada has increased, except for British Columbia where affordability has slightly improved. British Columbia still has the highest income requirement to qualify for a mortgage at nearly $200,000, while Alberta has seen one of the largest increases, with an income requirement of over $102,000. Ontario has also seen an increase in the required annual income to qualify for a mortgage, despite a decline in average home prices. These changes are influenced by a combination of factors, including interest rates, average home prices, and the implementation of stress tests.
